DJ Certification Program
8 Course Levels to becoming a professional DJ.

The DJ Certification Program is designed for beginner students committed to becoming a working DJ. The program includes training in a variety of mixing, scratching, and music production techniques. Curriculum consists of 8 Levels (details below). Certification Program students meet twice a week and the program is 6 months. Class sizes are small and contribute to a collaborative setting. Students keep the same day and time throughout the program to keep scheduling conflicts to a minimum. Enrollment in the program starts with taking the Intro (Levels 1 & 2). If you already have some experience, we are happy to evaluate you and recommend the correct Level for entry into the program. All students completing the program will graduate with certification and a plaque at graduation. Student must be 18 or over to participate. Payment plans are available for the DJ Certification. DJ Certification: 8 levels Included

Level 1 is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to learn to DJ. Our hands-on instruction will teach you the fundamentals of mixing, blending, and scratching. No matter your music tastes or commitment level, DJ 101 will teach you the fundamentals to get started on your journey. We provide all gear necessary for the class.

You will learn:

  • DJ history
  • Basic music theory, scratching & timing
  • BPM & song structure
  • Equipment overview (turntables, CDJ's, controllers)

Now that you have the fundamentals down from Level 1, it’s time to put those skills to work. Learn to mix seamlessly between all genres of music and gain a better understanding of when and how to utilize transitions. At the end of the course, you will perform a 10-minute set that will showcase what you have learned.

You will learn:

  • Manual beat matching and phrasing
  • DJ software: Serato and Rekordbox
  • Setting Cue Points and Loops
  • Understand Key Mixing and the Camelot system
  • Creating playlists/crates and understanding file organization

Set yourself apart from other DJs and showcase your creativity by incorporating various tricks and techniques into your live performance sets. Level 3 will improve your timing and record control from learning scratches like the chirp, stab, and transform to name a few.

You will learn:

  • Formal names and techniques to scratches on both hands
  • Using cue points to finger drum on time
  • Applying scratch techniques to your mixing

This course helps students understand the technical and creative process involved using the comprehensive digital audio workstation Ableton. By the end of the course, each student will have created at least one custom Intro edit that can be used in a DJ performance and a produced DJ mix using songs from the Intro course mix.

You will learn:

  • Ableton Live Fundamentals
  • 8 Bar DJ Intro/Outro
  • 10 minute DJ mix utilizing warping and automation

This performance based class will develop your mixing skills through real world situations, group activities, and valuable peer and instructor feedback. Level 5 mixing will teach you to augment your performances with advanced mixing tricks and song transitions, and how to properly utilize features and functions common in popular DJ software.

You will learn:

  • The difference between opening and prime time sets
  • Advanced Serato and Rekordbox USB workflow
  • Switching out live with another DJ on CDJ’s

Personalize your production style in Level 6. We’ll teach you to use stems, samples sounds and drum programming to give your music a unique personality that stands out from the crowd. You’ll also learn some of the basic concepts of arrangement, mixing and exporting files to share with the world. The perfect stepping stone to becoming a producer.

You will learn:

  • Stem mixing and Mash Ups
  • MIDI vs Audio
  • Arrangement, Mixing and Exporting
  • Performing remix in a DJ set

Once you’ve developed the skills to play out as a DJ you are ready to tackle the DJ business. Covering social media, press kits, creating a brand, and discussing strategy that will help you attract and keep clients.

You will learn:

  • Lock down your DJ name and what kind of DJ you want to be
  • EPK and how to market yourself
  • Technical Rider, Contracts and competitive DJ rates

Level 8 prepares you for real life DJing. You will complete weekly assignments that simulate a live setting with all the trouble shooting and unexpected turns that happen when DJing for a live audience. Learn how to market yourself as a desirable artist. From communicating with the client, to executing the event including master of ceremony duties and appropriate music programming.

You will learn:

  • What to do in an equipment malfunction
  • How to improvise your mix
  • Reading the crowd and recovery mode
  • Mic work and accommodating requests
